The Melbourne Metro Rail project will be one of the largest public transport infrastructure projects undertaken in Australia, with twin 9 kilometre rail tunnels and five new underground stations, including two in the Melbourne CBD, planned for construction. Elton Consulting worked closely with geotechnical specialists, Golder Associates, to design and deliver a communications and community relations strategy to support geotechnical investigations carried out in the early stages of the project in 2011/2012.
Geotechnical investigation works are essential to provide sound data for engineers and designers in the development of such a significant project. A range of communications activities were undertaken by Elton Consulting and project partners to keep stakeholders and the community informed about the works and minimise their impacts. This included location specific community liaison plans for delivery along the geotechnical drill routes. These provided:
- Guidelines for site selection to minimise public impact
- Site risk assessments to inform management measures
- Communications collateral to inform and engage with stakeholders
- Q&A documents to assist site staff in stakeholder liaison
