Elton Consulting, in conjunction with the City of Playford (SA) and Sustainable Focus, was awarded a Commendation in the South Australian Division of the Planning Institute of Australia’s (PIA) 2010 Planning Excellence Awards, for the Future Directions of Community Centres Strategy.
The Future Directions of Community Centres Strategy recognises the need to plan strategically for social infrastructure to meet projected population growth and changing community needs and expectations in the City of Playford. The Future Directions project aimed to identify the most effective, innovative and responsive way for the City of Playford to meet community needs for community centres for the future. With an anticipated population expansion of around 90,000 people in the next 25 years in the City of Playford demand for community centres and other forms of social infrastructure is a key consideration.
The Future Directions report identified key trends likely to be influential to the development of community centres in the City of Playford. These key trends were identified through a review of relevant literature including contemporary community facilities planning policies and through case study research in South Australia and nationally. These trends, and the guiding principles arising from them will help to focus future directions for the City of Playford in terms of policy frameworks; spatial planning; staging and prioritising; management and governance and the future role and identity of community centres.
Judges acknowledged “the excellent overview of varying models of community centres, their costs and management structures which will inform future planning for centres in the region.” Of particular interest to the judges was the “comparison of community centres elsewhere in the State and interstate, along with their underlying principles and management models.”
