Elton Consulting was appointed to work with Victoria Police and the Department of Justice and Regulation to design an effective public engagement process for the newly launched Brimbank Community Safety Network (CSN) program.
The Victorian Government identified that community safety is complex and cannot be solved by policing alone – more could be done to make communities safer. Since November 2017, local CSN projects have been established within twelve local government areas to ensure local residents, councils and community groups can contribute their ideas to Victoria Police’s ongoing efforts to improve community safety.
Elton Consulting was tasked with finding a new and engaging way to support the Brimbank community to contribute their ideas during a series of public pop-ups. They were accompanied by local police officers to speak to the community about their concerns. To capture the range of ideas from people with varying degrees of education and language barriers, a series of ‘ideas bubble posters’ were designed for people to contribute their ideas. Interpreters were also present at some events.
The engagement program was received positively by the majority of the community and Elton Consulting’s presence at the public events facilitated relaxed and meaningful conversations between police and community members.
