Elton Consulting worked with the Aspire Consortium to prepare a comprehensive social impact assessment of the Ivanhoe Estate Social Housing Redevelopment. Ivanhoe is the first project announced under the NSW Government’s $22 billion Communities Plus program, which will see the redevelopment and growth of social housing in NSW. Conducting a SIA signalled an acknowledgement of the need for urban planning and development processes to give appropriate focus to the social outcomes of urban renewal and to the experience of the communities affected by change. This SIA championed the view that best practice urban renewal acknowledges that physical improvements and enhancements to a place can be maximised if the social dimensions of change, both positive and negative, are considered and addressed.
The Ivanhoe SIA highlighted the positive benefits of an increase in housing supply, the creation of a mixed and cohesive community, enhancements to public facilities and open space and the delivery of social services for future social housing residents.
