Nelson Street, Ringwood was a new development incorporating three buildings, ranging from five and eight stories, including mixed use commercial and social uses at ground level, with extensive landscaping. This project comprised the largest individual infill development in Ringwood, within a local activity centre in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs and it included the provision of 14% affordable housing on a voluntary basis.
Elton Consulting was appointed to the project team to prepare a comprehensive social impact assessment report to VCAT standards to support the proposed development. This included preliminary engagement with surrounding local residents and neighbours. Community consultation was undertaken including the facilitation of an on-site community information session. Affordable housing advice was also provided, including the benchmarking of affordability in the Ringwood context, and negotiation with affordable housing providers in preparing a framework for delivery of affordable housing.
Elton also provided strategic communications and media advice which included hosting a website for the community engagement processes, media monitoring and advising responses to community opposition.
The final report and project outcomes were very well received by Hantang Pty Ltd as they were able to achieve the full approval for the development. The Elton team worked well to overcome and manage the many contentious issues around this development proposal. The voluntary affordable housing component was also very well received.
