In 2016 Chris Burke, the first Indigenous Australian elected to the ACT Legislative Assembly, floated the idea for a new Reconciliation Day Holiday, to replace an existing public holiday, acknowledging the culture, contribution and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Elton Consulting was proud to be commissioned by the ACT Government to carry out the community consultation to ask Canberrans what, when and how? This included large public workshops, focus groups with key stakeholders, an online survey, pop ups in various Tafe campuses.
The results were analysed and reported back to the Government with the community’s recommendations on when and what should be included in the Reconciliation Day celebration.
Thursday 28 May 2018 was the Inaugural Reconciliation Day in the ACT.
